During the early 1940s, the German army began researching the possibility of an artillery vehicle that mounted a short-barreled 15cm howitzer. The goals behind this idea were twofold: supporting the German infantry’s advances and dominating in urban combat. Early designs for such a self-propelled gun proposed using a Panzer V chassis.
